The Northwood Chargers (12-1) moved on to the third round of the NCHSAA 2-AA playoffs and ended the season for the South Granville Vikings (9-4) with an exciting 21-20 victory in Oxford.
The game lived up to the hype as both teams fought like heavyweights with big plays, hard defensive hits and key turnovers.
After ascoreless first quarter, the Chargers struck first with 2:26 left in the first half as Sam Griffin connected with wide out AJ Farmer on a beautiful leaping catch and run for 68 yards to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead.
The Vikings came out in the second half and turned to their big game man, Ian Bosley.
Starting the first drive of the second half from the 32 yard line, the Vikings drove 68 yards in 13 plays as Josh Thorpe hit Cory Hicks on a 11 yard touchdown pass in the corner of the endzone to tie the score at seven with 6:21 left in the third quarter.
On that drive Bosley carried five times for 64 yards. It didn't take the Chargers long to answer as Shane Peppers took the ensuing kick-off and handed off to Tra Chandler on the reverse. Eight seconds, and 82 yards later the Chargers were up 14-7.
That score held up until the Vikings tied the game with 5:28 left to play on a 54 yard touchdown run by Bosley who finished with a game high 194 yards.
That was the way regulation would end as both teams prepared for overtime. South Granville scored on its possession in overtime as Bosley scored from six yards out.
In overtime it is essential that you execute. The Vikings didn't on the extra point as the snap was high and the kick was blocked.
That was all the opening the Chargers needed. It took only one play for the Chargers to score as Peppers went in from 10 yards out. The extra point was good and the Chargers advanced in the hard fought contest. Northwood moves on to host Kinston.
